Basic Math Operations
Let’s explore the main arithmetic operations.
- Addition
We'll start with the easiest one. You simply add two numbers (or more if you're feeling bold). The numbers you're adding are called addends, and the final result, wait for it, is the sum.
Example $$ 1+4=5 $$ Here, 1 and 4 are the addends, and the result, 5, is the sum. If this doesn't make sense, we may have bigger problems!
- Multiplication
In multiplication, the numbers being multiplied are called factors, and the outcome is the product. Simple enough, right? Think of it like inviting two friends over, but six show up. Numbers tend to multiply like that.
Example. $$ 3 \cdot 2 = 6 $$ Here, 3 and 2 are the factors, and the result, 6, is the product.
- Subtraction
In subtraction, the number you’re subtracting from is called the minuend. The number you’re subtracting is the subtrahend, and what remains is the difference.
Example. $$ 7-5=2 $$ Here, 7 is the minuend, 5 is the subtrahend, and 2 is the difference.
- Division
Division involves taking a number, called the dividend, and splitting it by another number, called the divisor. The result? That's the quotient. Easy enough.
Example. $$ 8:4 = 2 $$ In this case, 8 is the dividend, 4 is the divisor, and the result, 2, is the quotient.
